Female student studying online bachelor of nursing

Swinburne Online is excited to offer the Diploma of Nursing (HLT54115). This practical qualification combines the convenience of online delivery with hands-on experience, and allows graduates to work in a range of health care settings under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

What you will learn

Students undertaking the diploma will learn essential health care skills, such as nursing care and health assessment. You will receive expert guidance on the administration and monitoring of medications, as well as legal and ethical parameters in nursing.

Online and external learning

Swinburne is one of the few universities in Australia that is offering the Diploma of Nursing as an online course. This means that you can enjoy the flexibility of online learning for the theoretical components of the course, while still receiving essential hands-on experience in Swinburne’s external simulations, real health-care environments and supervised clinical placements.

Skills First funding

The Diploma of Nursing (HLT54115) is covered by the Victorian Government’s Skills First Program, so eligible students are able to have part of their course fees subsidised by the government. To check your eligibility, visit the Victorian Skills Gateway website. The remainder of your course fees can either be paid upfront or deferred to a VET student loan.

A dedicated support model

We have created a support model that is designed to meet the specific needs of Nursing students. Your Student Advisors are available 7 days per week to answer your general course enquiries, and your Vocational Learning Advisors (VLAs) are on hand to provide guidance and support in your current units of study. Plus, new students are provided with both an online and on-campus Orientation program to help you feel confident at the beginning of your studies.

Careers and further study

The Australian Government’s Job Outlook site currently rates the ‘nursing support and personal care’ industry with ‘lower unemployment’. This is in part due to the variety of career pathways graduates have available to them. With a Diploma of Nursing (HLT54115), you could work as an acute care nurse, mental health nurse, rehabilitation nurse, aged care nurse, practice nurse, community care nurse or palliative care nurse.

Or if you wish to study further after completing your diploma, you may be eligible for up to 1 year’s advanced standing in a Bachelor of Nursing course. With a Bachelor of Nursing, you can become qualified as a Registered Nurse in Australia.
