Humans of Swinburne Online: Kathryn’s Story

Wake up, feed the baby animals, study, sleep, repeat. This is Kathryn’s day-to-day, alongside studying for her Master of Teaching (Secondary). She leads a busy life, but a good one.

Though studying to become a secondary teacher wouldn’t be possible without the flexibility available with Swinburne Online. With a busy schedule and a-million-and-one tasks to fit in a day, the online model means that Kathryn can study in her own time when it works best for her. So, let’s see how she’s doing.

One woman. All the skills.

Kathryn is the ultimate jack of all trades. She’s a manager for an internationally accredited seed and grain laboratory, runs a 260-acre farm with her husband, and is a proud mum to a lot of animals (like, a lot). Needless to say… she’s a very busy woman.

Heading back to the books

Farming takes up a huge part of Kathryn’s heart. But she had another great passion – teaching the next generation about the importance of agriculture.

Helping teenagers has always been a big part of Kathryn’s life. Ever since she finished high school, she has supported high school students in a mentorship role. It was only natural for Kathryn to make her mentorship “official” by working towards her goal of becoming an agricultural science teacher and help students learn all the ways in which their food makes its way from paddock to plate.

Swinburne Online has made it possible for me to make this transition into teaching.

University, it can fit your lifestyle

Going back to studying doesn’t mean you have to change your lifestyle – especially with Swinburne Online. You can enjoy a study schedule that’s catered to you.

Kathryn embraces the flexibility of studying with Swinburne Online. If she wants to log on first thing at 6am in the morning after she’s fed her animals? Not a problem. If she needs to study during her lunch break? Too easy.

Studying with Swinburne Online has meant that I can pursue something that I really love without sacrificing my lifestyle.

Support is just a click away

Although Kathryn may be a real-life superwoman, she still needs support. Thankfully, she’s got a team of friendly Swinburne Online OLAs (online learning advisors) to lean on. No matter what Kathryn needs, they’re ready to help and are incredibly supportive – from quick response times to tailored advice.

Kathryn’s journey has only just begun

And she’s enjoying every step of it. How could she not? She’s got a successful farm and a successful career on the horizon.

It’s been incredibly supportive, and I honestly don’t know why I didn’t do it sooner.
