Learning from your own experiences is something that Social Sciences graduate Justin took quite literally. Justin’s life has been anything but ordinary. Growing up with bipolar type 2, he’s faced his fair share of challenges. But instead of letting his struggles define him, Justin used them as fuel to pursue his passions.
One of those passions was entertaining people. With a knack for making people laugh, Justin packed his bags and moved from New Zealand to Brisbane, to pursue an entertainment career. He landed a gig as the mascot for the Brisbane Broncos, bringing joy to thousands of fans. But that wasn’t enough for Justin. He wanted to make a bigger impact.
Beyond the Broncos
After years of entertaining crowds, Justin decided to take a different path. He entered the construction industry, only to be hit again by his mental health struggles. This time, it was worse than ever. But Justin, with his unwavering resilience, decided to turn his pain into purpose.
Justin realised that he wanted to help others going through similar mental health challenges, especially those in the construction industry. He enrolled in Swinburne Online’s Bachelor of Social Science program, drawn to its flexibility and supportive learning environment.
I feel like Swinburne Online has certainly given me tools and techniques to advocate for people doing it tough out in the community. I know that people are still on the planet today because of some of the lessons that I learned [through Swinburne Online].
Swinburne Online: A Transformative Experience
Justin’s time at Swinburne Online was nothing short of transformative. He thrived in the online learning environment, surrounded by supportive eLA’s (Electronic Learning Advisors), a vibrant community, and like-minded students.
Justin’s journey was not without its challenges. As an older student, he doubted his ability to succeed in higher education. But with determination and the support of Swinburne Online, he proved himself wrong.
Through his studies, Justin gained the skills and knowledge he needed to pursue his passion for helping others. He now works as a mental health advocate, providing support to construction workers struggling with their mental health.
Justin’s story is a reminder that it’s never too late to chase your dreams and make a difference in the world. No matter your age or background, Swinburne Online can help you reach your full potential.
It’s life-saving stuff and it’s not just out of a textbook. I guess what I enjoyed most about my time with Swinburne Online, it was real-life stuff – it was tough, it was good, it was engaging, but bottom line is it was achievable and I did it.
