About this unit

This unit introduces students to the concept of cybersecurity and situates it in the context of international security more broadly. It traces the history of cybersecurity as a term and shows how the problem maps onto traditional security issues and also how it differs. It distinguishes cybersecurity from other forms of security and guides students to an understanding of the complexes involved in identifying key actors in cybersecurity issues and in designing appropriate policy responses. The unit uses cyberterrorism as a case study to introduce students to the complexity of cybersecurity as an analytic and policy problem.

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Identify and evaluate the key components of cybersecurity
  • Differentiate and analyse the key features of cyberterrorism
  • Critically analyse policy responses to cybersecurity problems.
