Humans of Swinburne Online: Kate’s Story

Swinburne Online graduate, Kate in her classroom

After years of devoting her time to care for her three children with complex disabilities, Kate was eager to re-enter the workforce. Casting a wide net and applying for various roles fueled a mix of hope and disappointment as potential opportunities always came to a halt – including being turned down for a job at Hungry Jacks! Nothing seemed to be working out, but life had bigger plans for Kate.

Where people would see barriers, Kate began to see opportunity. If it meant she needed to upskill to find a job, then it would have to be for her dream one – becoming a teacher. So, she decided to apply for a Master of Teaching (Primary) with Swinburne Online. Here’s her story.

Overcoming the odds

Studying is tough enough, but Kate had it even tougher. Not only for her was it about assignments and deadlines, but she also had the challenge of navigating the world of solo motherhood, while attending to her children’s complex health needs. But with Swinburne Online, the teaching team and community made sure that Kate felt set up for success. Empowering her to continually create and adapt a study schedule that was perfectly suited to her and her kids.

Swinburne Online allowed me the flexibility to study around my caring needs and appointments (even in bedside in hospitals). They were always so supportive.

Study that fits around your life

Kate did more than just succeed with Swinburne Online, she thrived. Kate could study around her busy schedule – instead of having to fit her life around study. It gave her the ability to continue to put the well-being of her kids first.

There was an instance where I had a child in hospital, and I was able to reach out and the team were able to work with me… and give me that little bit of extra support to make sure that I was on the right track.

It was Swinburne Online’s understanding team that gave Kate everything she needed to build her confidence. The OLAs (Online Learning Advisors) were always available to give her advice and extra support, especially when life threw her curveballs. The team went over and above to ensure Kate achieved her dream.

And Kate gave back, of course

Kate has a firm belief that everyone has the right to education so they can be the best versions of themselves. So, she decided to become a mentor for Swinburn Online as part of the ‘Just in Time’ program.  It allowed Kate to flex her burgeoning teaching skills, as she could support students with barriers to education. Something she knew all too well.

It was amazing how supportive everyone was and how connected we were, even though we were studying online.

Kate’s life is only getting better

It wasn’t easy. But after eight years of studying, Kate graced the graduation stage. Now, she’s working as a special need’s teacher for a local school, with an ambition to do further study to complete her PhD!

My experience with Swinburne Online has been life-changing, it’s been incredible.
