How to stay informed in the ‘post-factual era’

square icon 2 minutes

In a world of misinformation and so called ‘post-truth politics’, support for good journalism and timely reporting is crucial. It is so important to consume your world news from a variety of sources – particularly if you’re studying communications. Whilst it can be hard to find sources which are entirely unbiased, we have selected a few publications known for their independent, credible and contemporary world news reporting.

Reuters

Reuters is regarded by many as the most matter-of-fact online news source. This international news agency states that they are dedicated to journalistic objectivity with neutrality as a hallmark for their brand. With an agenda for accurate and fair reporting, Reuters broadcasts on global topics such as business, finance, politics, sports, entertainment, technology, health, environment and more.

Truthout

Truthout is a non-profit, progressive news organisation. Their daily newsletter is unconstrained by government support and corporate interest, and you’ll find vast coverage of global political and ecological discourses – including broad discussion of climate change. The great thing about this site is that it strives to provide the news which you should know, which mainstream media do not tend to report on.

AlterNet

AlterNet is an award-winning news magazine and online community that creates original journalism and amplifies independent media. AlterNet aims to inspire action and advocacy on global environment, human rights and civil liberties, social justice, media, health care issues, and more. You will also find grassroots success stories and inspiring narratives amid their world news broadcasts.

VICE News

VICE is an international news organisation created by and for a connected generation. Primarily targeting millennials, reporters at VICE call it as they see it. VICE prides itself on providing an unvarnished look at some of the most important events of our time, highlighting under-reported stories from around the globe. All of this is achieved through daily news videos posted on their website and YouTube channel.

The Conversation

Self-entitled to reflect “academic rigour, journalistic flair”, The Conversation is one of Australia’s largest independent news sites. Protocols enforced on journalists at The Conversation ensure only facts and evidence sourced from the academic and research community are used to develop news stories. Here you will find an assortment of world news on an array of topics including politics, entertainment, technology, culture and much more.

At the end of the day, you should never limit yourself to just one news source, but instead gather knowledge from multiple sources. This will ensure that you gain a well-rounded and considered perspective of the events unfolding in the world around you.
