Why choose to study a micro unit with Swinburne?

Do I have to come on-campus?

No, your micro unit is delivered in a fully online immersive learning environment. You log in anywhere anytime to access your learning materials, engage with your online facilitator and fellow students and complete assessments tasks.

How much does a micro unit cost?

Micro units typically cost $1,600 per unit.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes, you get a Certificate of Participation from Swinburne University of Technology, for having engaged in sufficient micro unit activity online. You can also receive a Certificate of Completion for successfully completing the required assessment tasks.

Will I get credit?

Those who complete three Swinburne Online micro units are eligible for 12.5 credit points, which is one Swinburne postgraduate unit.

Successful completion of a number of micro units may be used as an alternative basis of admission to a Swinburne course, if specified by the faculty. Applications using micro-credits must be lodged within seven years of their completion.

Those who have completed six micro-credits may be eligible for the academic credit of a related unit or an elective, depending on the number of electives in the chosen course.

Credit may be awarded on the basis of micro-credits for up to ten years after the completion of units, as long as they still meet the course requirements. Unfortunately, credit is not awarded to outcome units (e.g. capstones) from accredited university courses.

How long does it take?

Each course is will be approximately 4–6 weeks in duration different and require a commitment of around 4–6 hours per week. You have access to the content for approximately 6 weeks after the formal end of the micro unit.

How do I enrol?

Please register your interest with us by clicking through from the micro unit page and we will contact you with next steps.

How do I pay?

Click through the micro units page to the unit details. Click on the Enrol button and use a Credit Card or PayPal account to make your payment. We cannot accept payments by other methods at this stage.

If I can’t participate in the micro unit after having enrolled, can I get a refund?

You can get a refund if you apply in writing to microunits@swinburneonline.com at least three business days prior to the commencement of your micro unit. If you are experiencing severe medical or personal issues while into the micro-unit, you may be eligible for a refund later than this time. Please see the refund rules for more information.

What support is available?

Your learning will be facilitated by an online learning coach: an industry expert and trained online facilitator. You will be able to contact them via your micro unit website, email and during scheduled webinars.

You are also encouraged to contribute to and leverage from the expertise and knowledge of your fellow learners – peer support and learning will help make the experience more productive and engaging.

All your learning materials will be available for you to work through as soon as the micro-unit commences via the learning management system. Technical support is available from within the system by clicking on the Help button and then clicking on Canvas Support.
