Overview of the course

If you want to step up to a new level of expertise in cybersecurity, this non-technical course will set you on the right path. As an expert in cybersecurity management, you will help organisations to navigate the threats of cyberattack in the digital world.

One of the only courses in Australia with a focus on cybersecurity in an operational context, the Master of Cybersecurity Management produces graduates who stand out from the crowd. You will hone your leadership skills and technical expertise to manage risk and implement mitigation strategies to ensure the security of networked enterprises.

The course covers the technical impacts of cyber crime, as well as all the social, ethical, legal issues and governance frameworks involved. You will gain an industry perspective and insights into real world cases.

Students may exit this course at a Graduate Certificate level if they choose.

What are the entry criteria?

To gain entry into this course, applicants must meet the following entry criteria:

  • A recognised bachelor degree in a related discipline

OR

  • A recognised bachelor degree in any discipline PLUS a minimum of two (2) years equivalent full-time relevant professional experience*

OR

  • A Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in a related discipline

OR

  • A minimum of two years relevant work experience*

*Relevant professional/managerial experience and evidence of academic capability will be determined by the School Dean (or delegate) with reference to School determined guiding principles. Applicants will be required to submit a curriculum vitae (CV) with their application. Documents substantiating relevant experience are required, clearly detailing roles and duration, as well as evidence of formal and non-formal learning. Where relevant experience is used for the basis of admission, no further recognition for prior learning/credit can be granted on that basis.

On successful completion of this Course students will be able to:

  • Critically analyse cybersecurity in an organisational context, that respects organisational goals and needs, other individuals and the need for privacy
  • Apply knowledge to the interrelated social, technical, legal and ethical issues involved in the exploitation of computer technology
  • Critically review and evaluate the current literature on emerging topics within cybersecurity management and apply knowledge, research principles and methods to plan and execute a piece of independent research in cybersecurity management
  • Apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, expert judgement, adaptability, and responsibility as a practitioner or learner in the cybersecurity area
  • Communicate proficiency in professional practice to a variety of audiences, function as an effective member or leader of a diverse team
  • Apply coherent and developed knowledge of management concepts to identify, classify and evaluate cybersecurity risks across multiple domains and apply appropriate controls to mitigate such risks

Course rules

To qualify for the award of Master of Cybersecurity Management students must complete 150 credit points comprising of:

  • Eleven (11) core units of study (150 credit points)

Volume of Learning
The Master of Cybersecurity Management consists of a total of 11 units (150 credit points). Units normally carry 12.5 credit points (cps). A standard full-time load comprises eight (8) units (100cp), and a standard part-time load comprises four (4) units (50cp). The volume of learning of the Master of Cybersecurity Management is typically 1.5 years full time or part time equivalent.

Maximum Academic Credit
The maximum level of credit that can be granted for the Master of Cybersecurity Management is 75 credit points (normally six units)

  • Do I have to purchase learning materials?

    For students undertaking a degree, most of your learning materials are included with a free license provided to you by Swinburne Online. However, in some cases, you will be notified via your student email that you will need to buy specific software or eTexts. For TAFE Business students, all of your learning materials will be available online and are covered by your course fees. You won’t need to purchase any further materials.

  • Which units should I start with?

    When you enrol to study a degree with us, you will nominate how many units you would like to select per teaching period, based on a recommendation from one of our Course Consultants. From here, our enrolments team will allocate you automatically to the units they feel will be best suited to your needs, so you don’t need to worry about choosing units. If you want to choose something different than what you are allocated to, that is no problem, just get in touch with our Student Liaison Team and they will take care of it for you.

  • Do I need to be logged on to study at specific times?

    You won’t normally have to be online at a specific time. Your course material is available for you from the beginning of each teaching period and you can work through it in the hours that suit you.

    There are some live webinar sessions that run approximately once a month. These are a special opportunity for students to sign in at the same time as their tutors, normally before an assessment deadline. It gives you the chance to ask any questions relating to the assignment in real time and hear other student’s questions and thoughts. We understand that students won’t always be able to make these sessions, so they can be replayed the next day.
