Free TAFE for Priority Courses

Free TAFE for Priority Courses

Free TAFE for Priority Courses is a Victorian Government-led initiative that allows students to gain an in-demand qualification by reducing the financial barrier to study.

Eligible students will have their tuition fees paid for by the Victorian Government, while obtaining a qualification that opens up a range of job opportunities in fields with large skills gaps.

By studying Free TAFE for Priority Courses with Swinburne Online, you will benefit from the flexibility that online study offers, while also taking part in placements and on-campus residential units.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants will have their tuition fees covered by the Victorian Government, and can access a Free TAFE for Priority Course if the following criteria is met:

Under 20 or upskilling

  • Aged under 20 (regardless of any other qualifications they might hold); or
  • Are 20 or older and enrolling in a course that is a higher qualification than the highest qualification previously attained

Victorians who need additional support

Victorians who are:

  • Unemployed and clients of the Jobs Victoria Employment Network
  • Retrenched workers
  • Automotive supply chain workers

Looking to change careers

  • Victorians who want to reskill, change careers, improve their employment prospects and/or meet the needs of local industries, subject to availability of TAFE place, and prioritised based on need

Eligible students can access the Free TAFE Priority Course initiative only once, even if you do not complete your priority course. You need to consider your training choice carefully.

  • What is Free TAFE for Priority Courses?

    Free TAFE for Priority Courses is a Victorian Government initiative that covers your tuition fees in selected TAFE courses for eligible students.

  • Who is eligible for Free TAFE for Priority Courses?

    Victorian residents must meet the following criteria:

    Under 20 or upskilling

    • Aged under 20 (regardless of any other qualifications they might hold); or
    • Are 20 or older and enrolling in a course that is a higher qualification than the highest qualification previously attained

  • Does it cover all my fees?

    If eligible, Free TAFE for Priority Courses pays the tuition fees for your whole course. You’ll still need to pay for other fees, such as materials or uniform fees. For further information, visit the expenses page.

  • How many priority courses can I do tuition free?

    Free TAFE for Priority Courses will cover the tuition fees for one course only.

  • I am doing training now, should I drop out and start a Free TAFE for Priority Course?

    If you are currently doing training and you are happy with your course, you should complete it, especially if you have a Victorian Government subsidised place. You are limited in the number of times you can commence courses and be eligible for subsidised training. Withdrawing and commencing a new course may mean you become ineligible.

  • Can I do a course that’s not on the Free TAFE for Priority Courses list?

    The Victorian Government only covers the tuition fees of courses on the Free TAFE for Priority Courses course list.

    However, Swinburne Online offers a number of other TAFE courses you might like to consider. For more information, chat to a friendly Course Consultant on 1300 114 526.

  • If I do a free TAFE for Priority Course, will I be more likely to get a job?

    Free TAFE for Priority Courses are courses in areas that have been identified as in-demand from Victorian employers where there are likely to be more jobs in the future.

  • Will I receive practical experience during a Free TAFE for Priority Course?

    Yes. The Diploma of Nursing (HLT54115), Diploma of Early Childhood and Care (CHC50113) and Certificate III in Early Childhood and Care (CHC30113) include compulsory placements giving you invaluable industry exposure in your field of interest.

  • Will my studies be completely online?

    Swinburne Online delivers Free TAFE for Priority Courses through an innovative combination of online units, on-campus residential units and placements.

  • Will Swinburne Online assist me in finding a placement?

    Swinburne Online will assist you in finding a placement to conduct the clinical placement hours required as a part of the course.

  • Where can I complete the First Aid Certificate?

    You can complete your First Aid Certificate through Swinburne Professional. Other options, including St John Ambulance Australia, are also available.

  • How long will the course take to complete?

    The Diploma of Nursing (HLT54115) consists of 25 units completed over the course of 2 years. The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC50113) consists of 28 units over the course of 2 years. The Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC30113) consists of 18 units completed over the course of 18 months.
