Terms of Use

These terms describe the basis upon which you can use [Connect].  These terms constitute an agreement between you and Swinburne Online.


As a student of Swinburne University of Technology (the “University”), and as a user of Connect, you are bound by applicable standards of conduct, statutes, policies and procedures of the University, including any variations to these that the University makes from time to time.  These terms don’t modify or replace any of those rights and obligations.

Swinburne Online promotes learning environments that value respect and tolerance, and therefore expects all students using Connect to adhere to the following:

  • be polite and respectful of others’ views and opinions. Insulting, condescending or abusive words will not be tolerated. Debate is welcome as long as you are discussing the ideas, not attacking the person.
  • be sensitive to different cultural, political and religious backgrounds. These differences will add to your experience, not detract from it.
  • be aware of the impact of your posts. In general, if you think something could be taken the wrong way do not post it.

These policies and regulations are particularly relevant to your use of Connect: People, Culture and Integrity and Student General Misconduct.

Use of Connect

To use Connect you will need a user ID and a password, which you will need to get from us. Your use of Connect is subject to you complying with these terms, and subject to the discretion of Swinburne Online.

You may use Connect for general social and academic discussions.

You must not use Connect for commercial purposes – that means no advertising, and no buying or selling.  

You must not use Connect to conduct polls or petitions, or post links to polls or petitions.

You should exercise caution in disclosing any personal information via connect. 

Your use of Connect must comply with all applicable laws, including for example, laws about defamation, harassment, use of copyright material, etc.

You should not rely on Connect for accurate information about things that matter, such as exam dates, course requirements, course content, etc.  Information posted on Connect is not checked by us, and may be wrong. You should only rely on official information made available by the University.

Posts and other information on Connect are not endorsed by and do not represent the views of us or the University.

We may decide to store posts and information posted on Connect to investigate a complaint or an allegation of illegal behaviour.  We may need to share posts and information with third parties, such as the University (for example, in relation to disciplinary proceedings) or with the police (for example, if the police are investigations allegations of illegal behaviour) or with lawyers or other people representing someone who is alleging illegal behaviour.


We do not prescreen or review information submitted by users of Connect.

We might sometimes monitor posts and other activity on Connect but we do not accept any obligation to do so.  If we see something that we consider to be in violation of these terms, we have the right, but not the obligation, to remove or edit it.  We don’t accept any liability for monitoring or not monitoring Connect, and we do not accept any liability for removing or editing any post, or for continuing to allow any post to remain on display. 

If you see something posted in Connect which concerns you or that you think may be contrary to these terms, you should notify us by clicking the [“flag as inappropriate” button or similar].  We will then review the post.

Our role

If we consider that you have violated these terms of use, we may suspend your access to Connect or we may revoke your access to Connect. Our aim is make Connect a safe, welcoming, enjoyable and interesting place to be.  For that reason, we reserve the right to remove or edit any post, and suspend or exclude any user from Connect at any time and for any reason. 

We will usually store information posted on Connect for the duration of each teaching period.  At the end of each teaching period, we may delete all information posted during that teaching period.  So don’t rely on Connect to store important information.  

We will use reasonable efforts to make Connect accessible at all times, but you acknowledge that Connect may be unavailable from time to time due to technical problems, or to allow us to do maintenance.

We may use "cookies" and similar technologies to track your activity when using Connect. Our use of any information that we collect will comply with our privacy policy.

You can control your privacy, block users from private messaging you and adjust the notifications you receive via the settings on your Public Profile.  

The University and Swinburne Online do not accept any liability for your use of Connect. 

If you use Connect it means you accept these terms. We might change these terms from time to time.  If we do, the new terms will be posted here.  If we change these terms and any change is unacceptable to you, you should stop using Connect. If you continue to use Connect after we change the terms, your continued use means you accept the new terms.
