The No. 1 Supporter program is designed to enhance the level of support students receive outside the classroom by giving them the chance to nominate a family member or friend to receive updates throughout the teaching period.
Motivation can be hard to find in everyday life, and it’s easy to let things get in the way of online study. We got in touch with Lyn, a student in the program, and Reyne, her daughter and supporter, to find out how they made it work.
Reyne and Lyn worked in collaboration with the No. 1 Supporter program to develop their own support system. It was all made easier with the purchase of some corkboards. While at work, Reyne came across a sale on corkboards, and she decided to grab two for her mum: one for each subject. Both were decorated and covered with class schedules, important dates, reminders to keep active and hydrated, and positive messages.
The mother and daughter duo built their house together in 2019, which is complete with a study room for each of them. The corkboards were hung in Lyn’s space, and each week Reyne was able to see all upcoming tasks and would send words of encouragement as well as reminders for Lyn to stay healthy while she juggled work and study.
I would message Mum from work saying, ‘Have a good class tonight’, ‘Don’t forget you have a class tonight’, or ‘The boys and I are so proud of you’.
If Lyn had a class at night and an early start at work in the morning, Reyne would remind her to gather everything she needed for the next day to make sure she was still able to catch a good night’s sleep. They would also plan their meals a week in advance so there were always healthy meals ready to reheat when needed.
Perks of the program
While these two sculpted the No. 1 Supporter program in their own way, Reyne also shared with us a few aspects of the program run by Swinburne Online that she found most helpful:
It was useful getting emails because it reminded me to ask mum how she was going with her assignments… If she was stuck on a section, I would talk about it with her to help her get unstuck.
Together with a PDF booklet listing important terms and acronyms, this program gave Reyne a channel to support her mum without sacrificing too much of her own spare time.
We wanted to highlight this story for other students and supporters participating in the No. 1 Supporter program who are looking for creative yet simple ways to get the most out of the experience.
