Student Kelly goes from HR to PR

It can often take a lifetime to discover your passion, but for Bachelor of Communication student, Kelly, it took a stint in Human Resources to steer her in the right direction.

After finishing a degree in Business Management, Kelly began working in HR for Holden. When she was serendipitously assigned a project involving various public relations aspects, such as event management, she instantly knew she had found her calling.

Kelly decided to go back to university and pursue a career in PR online so she could continue working.

“Swinburne Online was easy to navigate and the application process was smooth, therefore confirming my desire to study with such a prestigious and well-managed university,” Kelly explains.

Entering the world of online study

Kelly found a new sense of determination to understand her subjects and thrive in her course when she started studying online.

She also found that she could maintain a very healthy work-life balance while studying, choosing to study at night time, so that it wouldn’t consumer her life.

Diving head-first into participating in online discussion boards and collaborating with other students made Kelly’s online study experience richer.

“Participating in online discussion boards is a useful way to think outside the square and really put theory into practice, and I also found that a great way to stay on track was to engage with other students,” says Kelly.

A new dream job

Kelly’s decision to go back to university and alter her career trajectory paid off, as she now works as a senior account executive at Buchan Consulting – an investor relations and communications agency.

“It was a huge decision to return to university later in my career and I am so happy that I chose this path as it has opened many career opportunities”, Kelly says.
