Millennial NAB manager chooses online study

How a millennial studies her bachelor online

Support, determination and time management helps 24-year-old Cassandra Kingsley achieve her study goals. We had a chat with her about her study journey and ambitions for the future.

Starting out at an on-campus university straight out of high school, Cassandra found herself enjoying her part-time role at National Australia Bank (NAB) more than her studies.

Focused on career

Cassandra decided to defer and focus on her career, working her way up the corporate ladder at NAB. She made it to a managerial role, and it was at this stage her manager suggested she consider going back to study, explaining how it would positively affect her career.

With their support, Cassandra began a diploma of Leadership & Management through Swinburne and is now completing her Bachelor of Business with a Major in Management online.

With my generation, we don’t just want to go with the norm, we want to have things convenient and work for us, not us fitting into something else.

Swinburne Online allows Cassandra to continue full-time work while completing three units per teaching period. Cassandra’s role as a Customer Care Manager also requires her to be on call 24/7 and, at times, she has to drop everything to fly interstate, meaning study flexibility is a must.

Driven by flexibility

“The main benefits of online study are balance, time management and convenience, you know if I’m working late or if I’m interstate, I just have to power up the computer and start studying, you know whenever and wherever, and you know it’s quite self-paced.”

In our fast-paced digital world, it is becoming more important for millennials to explore their options when it comes to study before ruling it out completely.

“With my generation, we don’t just want to go with the norm, we want to have things convenient and work for us, not us fitting into something else. And I think that studying online is perfect for that and Swinburne Online creates the perfect environment.”

I think it’s the way of the future as well, we lead busier lives and we want more options.

“If you put your mind to it and use the tools and resources, you can make it work, because if I can do it, I believe anyone can do it.”

Cassandra is on track to graduate with high distinction in mid-2018, with a bright future ahead of her.
